Cooeee, it is us, the chickens. At last you get to hear from the real workers here at Flamborough Rigg cottage B&B and the Hayloft, rather than that furry bunch.

We beautiful ladies love our life here in Stape, North Yorkshire. We just adore all the space we have to play in. All 6 of us started our lives, shall we say, in less spacious and relaxed conditions as battery chickens but were lucky enough to find our way here. Read More »

Phil and Caroline have had some young family visitors at Flamborough Rigg cottage this week.

They had brought swords and shields with them so Phil decided to take us all to Pickering Castle so they could put them to good use.

Hello Lily here. What a funny morning. Katie (the Boss) has been trying to tie one of Phil and Caroline’s sheep skin rugs around me so I can rehearse for the Wool Fair in Goathland on 22 June 2009. Katie and Meg have said I am a sure thing to win the unusual sheep breeds category and that I have to share any prize money with them as it was their bright idea.

It sounds like a great afternoon. As well as being the Annual Goathland Wool Fair it is also the Teeswater Sheep Breeders' Association 60th Anniversary.Read More »

I know it is mean but did those dumb dogs really think they would be allowed into the polo event, they would chase every ball and just cause chaos! As we all know Lily never returns with the ball, even if she has been going to those puppy training classes.

At this moment they are in the garden sulking as they over heard Phil mention that is a human only trip.

They will just have to hang out with me here at Flamborough Rigg Cottage, Stape.

It has to be a first, Meg and I have returned from a day out smelling wonderful! I think it has an awful lot to do with our destination, the wonderful Award Winning Lavender Farm, Gardens and Herb Nursery near Terrington, York.

Phil and Caroline were inspecting the wide range of lavenders and other perennials on offer to top up the court yard at Flamborough Rigg Cottage B&B. The colours were already amazing, I hope we get to go back later in the summer to see them in their full glory!& ... Read More »

What has to be one of the most unusual and exciting events takes place in Peasholm Park, Scarborough throughout the summer.

At times during the summer season, war breaks out on the Lake when 20ft replica boats recreate the tensions of a battle at sea.

As readers of our blog will already know, Whitby is one of our favourite places for doggie treat hoovering opportunities. All those lovely tourists are always dropping the odd tasty morsel. Sadly I don’t think that we will get a chance to taste any scraps from the award winning chef in Whitby unless Phil and Caroline bring a doggy bag home with them! Maybe if we loiter outside looking cute he might take pity.

Another outing is in the diary for us, we can’t wait! On Sunday 14 June it is the 31st North Yorkshire Show. It is to be held Otterington Hall, between Northallerton and Thirsk so we may have to do a few strategic barks to ensure that Phil and Caroline are up bright and early to drive us there. It looks like a full on day of snacking and activity!

Hi, Katie here. We had a brilliant day yesterday. We had a new friend come and play with us. He was a very handsome golden retriever called Toffee, from Scotland. His owners were staying at our B&B here at Flamborough Rigg Cottage for the weekend. As they were having Sunday lunch on the Pullman on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway they asked Phil and Caroline if Toffee could hang out with us.

While North Yorkshire has many miles of well marked hiking trails that you can navigate alone it is sometimes fascinating to explore with a local guide or expert who can point out those special features that you may otherwise have passed unnoticed. Here are just a few that you can join in June.

As well as forest and Moors here at Flamborough Rigg cottage and the Hayloft we are also surrounded by excellent farms that provide us with much of our produce that we offer to our guests at breakfast and dinner.

We are looking forward to the opportunity to explore some of the farms in our area to see first hand what the farmers work entails and to taste some of the produce on Open Farm Sunday.

Hi, little Lily here. I just love living in North Yorkshire. Where I used to live there was no forest to play in (just a yard), no fields full of cute fluffy sheep to watch and no big sisters (although Katie says I should refer to her as The Boss. This comment made Meg roll her eyes for some reason). Thank goodness Phil and Caroline rescued me and brought me to live with them at Flamborough Rigg cottage, in Stape near Pickering.

I think that Mr Thompson chose a mouse as his trademark just to torture us cats! There is nothing more disappointing than having stalked your prey with great hunting skill and in total silence, upon pouncing, finding out that it is actually carved of oak!

As you will all know I am an excellent surfer having perfected my technique in the sea at Sandsend, North Yorkshire. I know I might be regarded as the best doggie surfer in North Yorkshire (well that is what Caroline said), but I feel there is always room for improvement.  I am trying to persuade Phil and Caroline to take me to Scarborough to join the boat trip to go seal watching. I think I might be able to pick up some body surfing tips from the seals as the ones on that Life on Earth show on the TV were amazing! Read More »

This weekend saw the start of the racing season at Thirsk Racecourse and the season will start at nearby York Racecourse next month.

I am curled up here on the window sill enjoying the sun while watching Phil mow the lawns here at Flamborough Rigg cottage. Thank goodness for the double glazing blocking out the howling as he sings along to his ipod, I have such sensitive, beautiful ears! Humans have a hard life, if they were half as clever as us cats he would be sat with his feet up drinking coffee. It is all looking very nice but maybe I should sign him up for one of the courses with experts in the area, we could be playing that croquet on the lawns by the end of the summer. I will pop the details down and see if he takes the hint.

Here at Flamborough Rigg Cottage we are surrounded by a large field and at this time each year farmer Tim brings the tiny spring lambs and their mummys to live in the field. They are so cute and energetic, gambling about and bleating their little heads off. There is nothing I like more than laying here in the garden and watching them play. They are quite inquisitive, at times they will pluck up the courage to come right up to the fence and take a look at our guests, us dogs, that cat and the grumpy chickens. As soon as I bark hello off they bounce.

Hi, Katie here. I am not sure why you humans get so excited about seeing badgers, but I am told you do. The badgers I see from afar here in Cropton Forest are always so aloof and rude, they never want to play with me. But if you really insist on seeing some I believe those lovely people at the Forestry Commission know the prefect locations and will even guide you there.

It is nearly time for one of our favourite days out, the Pickering Game and Country Fair at Pickering show ground. It is great fun watching those lurchers, terriers and Gun dogs scurrying about while Katie and I concentrate on with the very important business of finding snacks, quality hoovering time!

It is a very popular place with lots of competitions and people showing their goods and funny animals. It is not everyday that we get to hang out with ferrets, pigs, birds of prey & giant horses. Easter is coming up soon but I am trying not to mention it in front of Meg and Katie as those crazy dogs get so excited. We had some new friends to walk with today, some children called Oliver, Jessica and Abigail and I had been sworn to secrecy about the adventure we had planned for them. Meg reckoned I would be sure let the cat out of the bag…..what does she mean, who put Payne in a bag?

We have just got back from a brilliant visit to the beach at Sandsend on the North Yorkshire coast.

It was my best day out ever as I have discovered something called, surfing! It is such a sunny day I thought I would take a dip as I was getting a bit warm chasing those seagulls. Meg wasn’t so enthusiastic; she is more of a beach and sunbathing girl. The water was a bit chilly but my lovely black coat kept me warm. I splashed around trying to get Meg wet and then Phil threw a stick for me to fetch way out to sea, I swam after it and the IT happened……….I was lifted up by a big wave and carried back towards the beach…AMAZING! Great excitement here at Flamborough Rigg Cottage, the fab builders who did all the renovations to make our three luxury Bed and Breakfast rooms and The Hayloft holiday cottage are back! Something about a new roof, but as they always made a fuss of us (and we know where they keep their sandwiches) let’s hope they’ll be here for a while. It’s only meant to be for a couple of weeks so I’d better get practicing my ‘sad eyes/nobody feeds me’ expression if it’s going to pay off…

Quite happily lying in a sunbeam (which we get a lot of in North Yorkshire no matter what people say!) when young Katie came along to taunt me – although safely out of range of my claws I notice. 'Why do you want to lie here all day doing nothing when you could be out with us?' She clearly knows nothing about cats – lying in the sun watching walkers and dogs amble through Cropton Forest and the North Yorkshire Moors is a cat’s idea of heaven – not that anybody invites me to go out anyway. It appears that Katie, Phoebe and Meg had a special treat. They were taken for a walk around Pickering& ... Read More »

I keep hearing how good the ‘Farmer Brown’s’ Farm Made Vanilla Ice Cream is. Some great guests from Lincolnshire staying in The Hayloft here at Flamborough Rigg Cottage kindly brought some for us (seems they have cows and make it themselves.) Although there’s little chance of me ever getting to try some I’m hoping that they’ll come and see us again sometime anyway.  The boys, Jack and Sam had seen our pictures on the internet, so at almost 12 years old it seems I’m sort of famous.
